Everest Day : An insight into how it all started
Everest Day is celebrate for the commemorate the achievement of Sir Edmund Hillary. On 29th May 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa did the first ever summit of Mt. Everest. It is believed they started to walk all the way from Kathmandu and the expedition totaled more than 400 people including porters and Sherpa guides.
Everest Day is celebrate in May 29 as order to commemorate these two brave humans and mountaineering pioneers.
Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon held every year on the may 29,the Everest day.There are three categories in this race where first one is a full marathon from Everest Base Camp to Namche, along that the second one is a half-marathon from Dingboche to Namche, whereas the third and possibly the most extreme one is the ultra marathon that moves towards Nha La and descends via Mongla to Namche. The marathon known to be one of the highest and tough races in the world. The starting point of the marethon is at 5365m.
NTB organizes fun competitions, quiz contests related to mountaineering and other activities in Kathmandu. This activities mark this special day. The climbing and tourism community in Nepal, all over the world celebrate this wonderful day with enthusiasm and teary eyes.
