You may have heard “carbon footprint” before, but what does it mean? To summarize, a Carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere due to an individual’s or an organization’s activities. Typically measured in units of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e), carbon footprint includes emissions from transportation, electricity use, and the production of goods and services. With climate change being one of the burning issues in today’s era reducing carbon footprint is a crucial step towards environmental consciousness. And adding a spotlight to the tourism industry only seems practical with the number of human inflows in this industry. There are various ways for tourists to decrease their carbon footprint during their tour in Nepal. We have divided measures into three basic categories based on the approach an individual can use.
- Choice approach:
The choice approach refers to your freedom of choice. The conscious choices you make to add effort to the mitigation of climate issues. You can choose whichever product options you want based on your economic capability and whims. Likewise, you can also choose environmentally conscious options for their services. Eco-friendly accommodations are an excellent choice for travelers who want to minimize their environmental impact while on vacation.
Here are some ideas you might want to consider:
- Choose eco-friendly accommodations, such as hotels or bed and breakfasts with energy-efficient appliances, and use sustainable practices.
- Use a travel agent who specializes in eco-tourism and sustainable travel.
- Choose tour operators and activity providers that prioritize sustainability and environmental conservation.
- Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers environmental conservation and sustainability.
- Support local businesses and communities by choosing locally-owned accommodations, restaurants, and shops.
- Choose eco-friendly modes of transportation, such as electric or hybrid cars or trains.
- Support approach:
You can support various causes active in reducing climate change issues either directly or indirectly. You can make financial contributions or volunteer for the causes. Research and support sustainable tourism initiatives in the destinations you visit. These initiatives may focus on preserving natural habitats, supporting local communities, or promoting environmentally responsible tourism practices.
Some of the things you can do to support such causes are mentioned below:
- Choose nonstop flights, as they use less fuel than flights with layovers.
- Offset your carbon emissions by purchasing carbon credits or participating in a carbon offset program.
- Consider the environmental impact of your activities and choose eco-friendly options, such as snorkeling instead of scuba diving or hiking instead of skiing.
- Research and support sustainable tourism initiatives in the destinations you visit.
- Carpool or use a rideshare service instead of driving alone.
- Educate yourself about the environmental impacts of your travel choices and try to minimize them.
- Support conservation efforts in your destinations by volunteering or donating to local organizations.
- Consider the environmental impact of your food choices and try to eat locally-grown and sustainable options when traveling.
- Direct Approach
A direct approach is when you do things directly to support the environment, such as not leaving non-compostable wastes in tourist areas disposing of your waste responsibly, and properly disposing of any trash you generate. At the same time, traveling is an important way to reduce your environmental impact. This can include properly disposing of any garbage you produce and recycling whenever possible. Proper waste management can help to reduce pollution and protect natural habitats and resources.
Some of the things you can directly do are mentioned below:
- Dispose of your waste responsibly and properly dispose of any trash you generate while traveling.
- Reduce your use of single-use plastics by bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag.
- Choose eco-friendly or reusable packaging for any items you need to take with you, such as snacks or souvenirs.
- Use electronic ticketing and documents instead of paper whenever possible.
- Pack biodegradable or eco-friendly products, such as sunscreen and insect repellent, to minimize environmental impact.
- Use digital maps and guides instead of paper ones to reduce waste.
- Pack lightly to reduce the weight of your luggage and minimize the fuel used for transportation.
- Use public transportation, walk, or bike instead of driving or flying.
