Overview

Head into the forbidden kingdom

A seriously underrated trek, go on this astounding 16 days’ trip into the heart of Mustang, the once-forbidden kingdom of Lo Manthang. Arrive at the bustling city of Kathmandu and explore the streets of Thamel. Drive through winding hilly roads to Pokhara. Visit Fewa Lake, Nepal’s 2nd largest lake, and go on a boating trip to Tal Barahi Temple. Take a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, the major trade center in Mustang. Trek to Kagbeni, and enter the restricted area of Upper Mustang. Visit villages like Chele, Syanboche, Ghami & Tsarang and arrive at the iconic once-kingdom of Lo Manthang. Explore the ancient city and the nearby Chosur caves, and hike up to the nearby Nepal – Tibet border. Fly back to Pokhara.

Itinerary

Arrive any time after 1200. We’ll receive you at the airport and conduct the hotel transfer. Our guide and company representatives will meet you at the hotel, and conduct a pre-trip orientation. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.
Meals: Dinner
Have an early breakfast and drive to the lake city of Pokhara. The drive should take around 6-7 hours (200KM). Transfer to hotel will be conducted on arrival. Spend the evening at leisure. We’d recommend taking a boating trip to Tal Barahi temple and doing some local shopping. Having dinner outside your hotel at one of the chic lakeside restaurants is really recommended. Overnight stay in Pokhara.

Take a morning flight to Jomsom. The flight is 15-20 minutes’ long. Due to extreme winds after 1000, there are no flight except in the morning. So we will arrange for the morning flight. From Jomsom, trek through the barren landscape to Kagbeni. The trek is gentle for the most part, and is extremely scenic. Overnight stay in Kagbeni.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Witness the sunrise at Kagbeni and spend the morning at leisure. Have your permits checked, and trek alongside the Kali Gandaki River. Trek on sand and through fierce winds, and arrive at the village of Tangbe. Rest at Tangbe, and see the alleyways, the white-washed houses, the fields and the orchards. Continue, and pass through another small village and cross the Kali Gandaki river. You’ll arrive at Chele village in the afternoon. Overnight stay in Chele.

A slightly difficult day of the trek, today you’ll be passing two high passes, Taklam La (3,624m) and Dajori La (3,735). Enjoy amazing views of Tilicho, Yakawa Kang and Damodar Danda. You’ll pass a moderate cave by the name of Ramchung on the way. Descend further and reach the village of Samar. Have your restricted area permits checked at Samar, then trek the ridge overlooking the village, and descend. A gentle downhill trek will take you to the village of Syanboche. Overnight stay in Syanboche.

Start your day early, and ascend the Yamda La Pass (3,850m). You’ll pass by teahouses, chhortens and scenic villages and settlements. Trek through barley and poplar fields, and reach the Nyi Pass (4,010m). Descend, and arrive at Ghami, one of the biggest villages in the region. Overnight stay in Ghami.

Today’s trek begins with a descent on a rocky trail. Cross the Ghami Khola via a suspension bridge and begin ascending. Pass the beautiful mani walls on your way to Tsarang La Pass (3,870m). From there it’s a short walk to the village of Tsarang. Overnight stay in Tsarang.

Begin your trek by descending along a canyon and crossing a river. Then trek uphill to Lo La Pass (3,950m), which is an excellent vantage point to see the walled city of Lo Manthang. Trek downhill to arrive at Lo Manthang. The views of Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna I & Bhrikuti peak are stunning. Visiting the nearby Damodar Kunda (pond) is also recommended. Overnight stay in Lo-Manthang.

Spend the day at the once forbidden city of Lo Manthang. Visit the three major gompas in the region; Jhampa, Thupchen and Chhoeda. You can also visit the popular Chosur caves in the region today. Overnight stay in Lo Manthang.

You’ll take an alternative route back to Jomsom instead of retracing the same route. The trail passes through the village of Gyakak. Visit the ancient Ghar Gompa with its beautiful rock paintings at Gyakar. Continue your trek to Drakmar. Overnight stay in Drakmar.

Start your trek early in the morning to avoid most of the extreme wind in the region. Descend gradually and pass through barley fields before arriving at Ghilling. Free afternoon at Ghilling, explore the village. Overnight stay in Ghilling.

Trek through the barren surrounding and arrive at the small settlement of Chhuksang. The day’s trek is gentle, and you can admire the views of some of the highest peaks in the region. Overnight stay in Chhuksang.

Start the trek early and arrive at Kagbeni. The Mustang trip officially ends at Kagbeni. Then retrace your way back to Jomsom. Overnight stay in Jomsom.

Take the morning flight back to Pokhara. We’ll receive you at the airport and conduct the hotel transfer. Relax and shred away your fatigue. Explore Pokhara at leisure. Hiring a bike and touring the city may be a great way to know Pokhara. Overnight stay in Pokhara.

Drive back to Kathmandu. Transfer to hotel on arrival. We’ll host a celebration dinner at one of the authentic Nepali restaurants in Kathmandu. Great food, traditional wine, dance & music. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

Accommodation:

è On fixed departure trips, accommodations at Kathmandu and Pokhara will be organized at 3-star or similar hotels / resorts with all modern amenities.

On private trips, three accommodation options (standard, deluxe and premium) will be provided as choices. Accommodations will be arranged as per the chosen standard during booking. Read our accommodation standard article for more info.

Accommodations during the trek, on both fixed departure and private trip options, will be extremely basic, tea-houses and small lodges with sleeping and basic meal facilities. Modern amenities are usually absent, as is the hallmark of remote mountainous areas. 

Sharing & Supplement:

è All accommodations will be arranged on double and triple sharing basis, depending on the group sizes. If you are booking solo, our team will arrange a room sharing for your with a fellow traveler of the same gender.

A single room can also be availed on supplementary basis. The single supplement option will be provided as an add-on during check-out.

Starting & End points:

è Trips will start and end at the designated joining points in Kathmandu. The joining point will be an easily accessible hotel in the downtown areas within an hour’s drive from Tribhuvan International Airport. The specific names and address will provided after booking. A trip orientation program and meeting, starting from 1900, will be conducted at the joining point on Day 1, which the participants are recommended to attend.

Arrival & departure transfers:

è All trips, both private and fixed departures, do not include airport pickup & drop facilities on the base option. However, these options can be selected as add-ons during check-out.

This trip will lead you through difficult terrain in higher altitudes (above 3000 meters). Trekking duration will be an average of 6 hours a day, through forests, and steep mountain trails. Please ensure that you are physically fit to go on this trip before booking.

è Upper Mustang Trek (16 Days) has domestic flights (Pokhara – Jomsom – Pokhara) included. Jomsom, being an extremely rural mountainous area, is prone to flight delays due to weather and visibility issues. Such issues may cause stopover at Pokhara or Jomsom. Stopover will be subject to an additional charge of USD 40 per person per night.
